This training programme provides information on the requirements and responsibilities of people wishing to transport dangerous substances (HAZMAT) on South African roads, and the development and implementation of the highest standards to ensure accident and/or spillage prevention, thus ensuring the safety of transporters and other road users.

Our training is designed to assist employers to comply with the training requirements of the National Road Traffic Act regulation 8: Transportation of dangerous goods and substances by road. Participants are instructed with respect to the requirements of the legislation for receiving, handling and transporting of dangerous goods.

Entry requirements

Novice candidates must be 25 years and over with a minimum of Grade 10 certificate or NQF2 equivalent and hold an appropriate vehicle driver’s license for the class of vehicle they will be operating.

Course content

Introduction to conveying dangerous goods

We discuss terminology, definitions and legislation.

Dangerous goods classes, exempted quantities and compatibility

Here we outline classifications, exempted quantities, exemptions, multi-loads, and provisions applicable to conveying and segregation, of dangerous goods.

 

Placards and documentation

We take the learners through placard systems, documentation and required permits.

Emergency response procedures and personal protective equipment

We focus on personal protective equipment and clothing, emergency response procedures, safety measures at an incident scene and examples of dangerous goods incident reports (SABS 0232-3).

Driver’s duties, documentation and behaviour

We look at the responsibilities of the driver, professional attitude in the workplace, pre-trip inspections, roadworthiness and inspection requirements for the vehicle and behaviour en route.

Loading and off-loading dangerous goods

We cover loading operations, off-loading operations and other aspects that need to be considered.

Vehicle stability

We detail centre of gravity, forces and load distribution for maximum stability of dangerous cargo while being conveyed, as well as achieving greatest ease of driving with abnormal or dangerous loads.

 

Fire fighting

We discuss classification of fires and extinguishing methods, emergency safety procedures to follow in case of fire and ignition prevention.

 

Assessment methods

We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to determine the learner’s initial understanding of the subject matter (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent. If not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
